Kaiser Family Winery: Makers of the award winning Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley

29/10/2020 Rick and Theresa Kaiser, both CPAs started Kaiser Family Winery in 2013. They first made wine in 2002. Over those initial 11 years of trial and error, they learned how to craft wines that focus on freshness, consistency, and purity.

Kaiser Family Winery is owned and operated by Richard Kaiser; a CPA and financial planner.  Rick fell in love with wine in the early 1990s and started making wine in 2002.  The estate vineyard was purchased in 2004 and Rick has been able to craft distinguished wines ever since.

Their 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon won a Gold Medal at the 2020 Sommeliers Choice Awards and was awarded 91 points.  Their 2018 Sauvignon Blanc won a Gold Medal and was awarded 93 points. Their 2017 Petite Sirah won a Silver Medal at the 2020 Sommeliers Choice Awards.

The stheirce for this wine is from their estate called Buoni Amici Vineyards in Calistoga.  The then ten year old vines are producing wonderful fruit. The wine has energetic aromas of black currant, plum, and vanilla.  The energy in the nose is equally enjoyable and has a mouth with beautiful ripeness, mocha, black cherry, and savory herbs.  It has a chewy backbone and a lively finish.  It is a perfect match with fatty cuts of meat, lamb, and pork.  And do not forget to save some for a piece of dark chocolate.

Napa Valley provided near perfect growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc grapes.  In this vintage, we extended the contact of the wine with lees after fermentation.  The result is a wine with aromatics of nectarine, lemon, floral, and anise.  It is a crisp, elegant and vibrant wine with flavors of pear, melon, citrus, and tropical fruit.  The wine is well balanced, with a proper level of acidity.  Slightly chilled, it pairs well with fish, cheese, and light fare.

In 2004, property was purchased on the valley floor in Calistoga with scenic views of Mt St Helena and the eastern cascade of Napa Valley.  In 2005, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted.  The farm is called Buoni Amici Vineyard.  Buoni amici means good friends in Italian. Calistoga became an AVA in 2012 because of its unique characteristics.  A typical day in the growing season starts with warmth and sun, followed by an afternoon breeze, and then the natural air conditioning provided by the fog coming over the Mayacamas Mountains. All attempts are made to work with what Mother Nature has to offer and make decisions in the vineyard so that the grapes fully mature and there is the proper balance between sugar and ph levels.

There is no step in the process that does not have their personal attention to detail. The flagship wines are Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.  Other wines are produced when the right opportunity develops.  As such, quality Zinfandel fruit was made available in 2013 and then some Sangiovese grapes in 2014.  There always will be some Sauvignon Blanc to get you to the dinner table and a glass of port wine (made with Petite Sirah) for after dinner.

Sommeliers can contact Rick Kaiser at (707) 341-3450 for sampling and pricing. They provide a 50% discount and promote the restaurant establishments on their website.

Restaurant owners can check out their 93 point Sauvignon Blanc and support them and the Napa valley area.
