Hunter Glenn Estate is the label of Caroline and Jeffrey Shifflett, a brother/sister team and 4th generation of a Napa-Valley grape growing family. Jeffrey is responsible for production; after many harvests in the cellar, he pivoted to focus on farming, now managing the family’s 120 acre property in the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley and making Hunter Glenn wines on the side. Caroline is responsible for building relationships throughout the United States and managing the daily sales efforts on property.
The Shifflett family arrived in the Napa Valley, by way of Iowa and the vast potato and corn fields, with a child in tow they set out to make a better life. In 1942, after a successful run in the lumber business, Wade Sr. and his wife Mimi purchased a picture-perfect 120 acres in the foothills of the Mayacamas Range. Affectionately dubbed "The Ranch" it quickly became the family's favorite place to farm, graze and relax.
This wine tastes just like blueberry vanilla syrup, in the best possible way! Aromatics of polished leather mingle with fresh tobacco. The palate bursts with juicy, red fruits that mellow into the most pleasing and elegant finish.
They are dedicated to small production wines, made with minimal intervention both in the vineyard and the winery, truly allowing the fruit to shine through and showcasing their sense of place. They are proud to call Napa Valley home and look forward to continuing their family's long standing legacy with their wines. They currently produce 5 Napa Valley red wines and 1 Sonoma Chardonnay.
The Chardonnay and Napa Valley Red Blend have been foundational wines in their program that we’ve been making since 2013. In 2016 they layered on a single vineyard Shifflett Ranch Syrah and in 2017 they added a 100% Merlot, 100% Cabernet Franc, and 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Shifflett Ranch.
The grape growing history of St. Helena dates back to the 1850's when Dr. George Belden Crane planted a vineyard just a few blocks away. From then on it's been the epicenter of the Napa Valley and a perfect place to grow elegantly structured wines. Pioneers of the industry have long made St. Helena their proving grounds, Spotteswoode, Charles Krug, and Schramsberg to name a few.
Sommeliers can contact caroline@hunterglenn.com for sampling and pricing information as they look to expand their wines in the restaurants of the United States.
They are happy to support trade with wine dinners, staff training, sample bottles and would love to host anyone in the trade for a tour and tasting at our family ranch to taste through the entire line up and learn more about this special place they call home.
