Maison Telmont has announced a groundbreaking achievement in the wine industry with the introduction of the world's lightest champagne bottle. Weighing in at just 800 grams, this innovative bottle, developed in collaboration with French glassmaker Verallia, sets a new standard for sustainability and carbon footprint reduction in champagne production.
The lighter bottle, 35 grams less than the previous 835-gram standard, represents a significant 4% reduction in CO2 emissions per bottle. This reduction extends beyond production, with further environmental benefits realized during transportation. Ludovic du Plessis, CEO of Maison Telmont, highlighted the importance of this milestone: “Our objective is to become the first Climate Positive Champagne house by 2030 and Net Positive by 2050, reducing our carbon footprint by at least 90%.”
For sommeliers and wine professionals, this development is critical for several reasons. Firstly, the move to a lighter bottle without compromising the safety and quality of the champagne – essential given the high pressure within champagne bottles – demonstrates a significant technological advancement.
