Château Picoron is a sustainable Bordeaux winery producing expressions of Merlot, which represent the many generations of our winery. Established in 1570, now Australian owned, and family run.
All our wine is Vinified plot by plot in very limited production. Each wine represents a single parcel of land, to express the unique personality of our terroir. We don't strive to be 'typical' of Bordeaux, but instead, express the best of our Terroir.
We are mid-way through our 2020 harvest. This year, Chateau Picoron is producing 3 new expressions of Merlot to express the diversity of Merlot, of Bordeaux, and of our vineyard. We produce a white pressed Merlot, a Merlot Rose, and a carbonic, no sulfite red. All released March 2021.
Our vineyard is 4.5 Hectares, producing only 2300 cases per year. All handmade by our winemaker, Stéphane Apelbaum.
Founded in 1570 by the Picoron family, Château Picoron has a long history of wine. Now days, Château Picoron is operated by an Australian family. What we produce is as much a celebration of the history of our winery, as it is the future. Our winery is a coming together of France & Australia, new & old, past & future.
We produce limited production wines which celebrate our past, and inspire the next generation of wine drinkers. We produce only 2000 cases of wine per year, for our friends & family.
Transparent, terroir expressive and minimal intervention wines that reflect the past & future of Bordeaux’
Château Picoron does not produce to be compared, but to express a wine which is uniquely ours. Our wines are not a blend of acres of vines, but a transparent expression of a specific place. We vinify our wines plot by plot, some producing only a few thousand bottles, and the result is a clean expression of terroir.
Our winemaker, Stephane Apelbaum, believes nature to be our greatest collaborator, preferring a minimal intervention to vineyard management and winemaking. Our wine is produced sustainable, and we are on a journey toward organic farming conversion.
Chateau Picoron 2016 is one of the best wines to order for your restaurant if looking for a great price. The wine won a silver medal at the 2020 Sommeliers Choice Awards.
Sommeliers Business recommends their Petit Picoron 2017 which won 93 points at the 2020 Sommeliers Choice Awards.
Merlot. Cold fermented & lightly oaked
Smooth, fruity, dry yet beautifully deep in flavour. Ripe red fruit, vanilla & spices, mouthwatering fresh berries and light tannins. Fresh and powerful.
The wines are judged in five categories: food parability, typicity, quality, value, and packaging. The judges ask: would I stock this wine, and is it good enough for customers to order a second glass? Wines are graded out of 100, with only those above 95 points winning the coveted Double Gold award. There are also category awards, with best in show given to white, red, sparkling, rose, and an overall winner every year, by the bottle and by the glass – reflecting how wine is presented in restaurants.
